Impact and Accomplishments

  • Newton’s Road partnered with LIFT Teen Center in Suttons Bay to provide a fun, hands-on, STEM-related experience for middle school students. Using the Makedo Kit, students assembled a giant windball. Each student painted a cardboard square and used the Makedo tools and 3D printed screws to build their creation! Many students were in awe as the windball started to take shape, layer by layer. The day was also filled with STEM riddles and creating piggy banks out of plastic jars and cardboard.Click to see a larger version LIFT Middle School Builds Giant Windball Newton’s Road partnered with LIFT Teen Center in Suttons Bay to provide a fun, hands-on, STEM-related experience for middle school students. • Support from The Oleson Foundation allowed Newton’s Road to implement 3 STEAM Stations across our region. They are located at the Great Lakes Children’s Museum, Salvation Army, and the Mancelona Family Resource Center. These colorful and engaging carts encourage families to swap out STEM Kits, take home STEM craft bags, and explore our Career Investigator and other STEM-related resources. The take home bags have been a huge hit and families love playing with the STEM Kits on site.Click to see a larger version Newton's Road STEAM Stations Support from The Oleson Foundation allowed Newton’s Road to implement 3 STEAM Stations across our region. • The Traverse City Pit Spitters invited Newton’s Road to participate in their Kid’s Day games with STEM-related activities. We brought STEM Kits like the Circuit Maze, Code n’ Go Robot, and Pattern Play. Our table was full of kids the entire game! A few of the kids didn’t leave our table the entire game. Many faces lit up as they coded the mouse through the maze or created the correct electrical path to light up the bulbs.Click to see a larger version Pit Spitters Kid's Day Games The Traverse City Pit Spitters invited Newton’s Road to participate in their Kid’s Day games with STEM-related activities. • Newton’s Road participated in many of the Evenings on River Street events in Elk Rapids. This outdoor event every Wednesday through the Summer created a lot of traffic from locals and visitors. We set up STEM Kits and encourage families to check them out from their local library for free, just like a book! Some of the kids’ favorites were free playing with the KEVA planks to build bridges and structures and programming Botley to walk a chalk line in the street.Click to see a larger version Evenings on River Street Newton’s Road participated in many of the Evenings on River Street events in Elk Rapids.
